![]() ![]() ![]() Development of the mod started in March 2016, using the GZDoom Builder for creating the level maps and Slade for creating new NPCs and items. The mod will not be playable with Brutal DOOM or Project Brutality, even though the modder is willing to allow other modders to create mods and source ports for the project once it is released. The story of the mod will follow a fan-written arc that does not include Final DOOM nor DOOM 64. However, to avoid any copyright disputes (since there is already a DOOM 3), the name of the mod was changed and simplified. Originally, the name of the mod was going to be DOOM III: Hell Reawakened. The media covered the issue extensively, calling particular attention to the fact that police abuse was not evenly distributed throughout American society, but disproportionately victimized people of color. Political leaders condemned police use of excessive force and appointed special commissions to investigate incidents of brutality. The Rodney King incident projected the brutal reality of police abuse into living rooms across the nation, and for a while, the problem was front page news. Chris Plante of Polygon called it "incredible", "stomach-churning" and "hysterical". TechRadar called it "the most modernised, spectacular Doom mod to date". Andras Neltz of Kotaku said that it was "shaping up to be one of the modding greats". However, he later mentioned on his Twitter feed that Brutal Doom "is not how doom's supposed to be played." Dominic Tarason of Rock Paper Shotgun remarked how the mod has "risen to such ubiquity that it has spawned a whole parallel mod scene of its own" and considered it "a game in its own right at this point". The mod was mentioned by John Romero, who jokingly said that if id Software had released the original Doom with the features of Brutal Doom, they would have "destroyed the gaming industry". The mod has been in development since 2010, and continues to release new updates. It adds numerous gameplay elements and graphical effects.
